ACTS is an acronym for Agriculture, Crafts, Trades and Studies and the vision has remained strong over the last three decades. Today, ACTS is committed to total development through projects that revolve around education, environment and health programmes. The work at ACTS includes a number of exciting projects, including slum schools, a village community health centre, bio-gas production, and government-recognized schools and colleges that provide affordable quality education across India
In 1979 Dr Ken Gnanakan and his wife Prema, along with their children, Santosh and Anupa, decided to return to the country of their birth, India. Ken had been challenged, during his time at London University to return to Bengaluru, India, and transform lives through a unique vision and model that would later be called ACTS Institute. ACTS is an acronym for Agriculture, Crafts, Trades and Studies.
Along with his brother Dr Ricky Gnanakan (who had left a successful career with Avery to join ACTS) and Ricky's wife Valsa, Ken and Prema, and their dedicated team, built ACTS from its humble beginnings in rented houses in Koramangala, Bengaluru, into the large organization it is today.
In the early 1980s, ACTS moved out of Koramangala to "the land", a quiet and lonely two-acre campus outside Bengaluru. Today, that "land" is on one of the busiest roads in the Bengaluru - the Hosur Road, which leads to the Electronics City - and is where the ACTS Secondary School (ICSE) is situated.
Over the last three decades, ACTS has grown significantly - schools, colleges, a university, environmental programmes - all the while retaining its commitment to serve the poor. Today, ACTS has projects on a number of different campuses in and around Bengaluru, as well as in Hyderabad, Delhi, Allahabad, Kacchawa (UP), Calcutta and Shillong (Meghalaya, North East India).
ACTS is ready to take on the future and will continue to build on the principles that have seen it through an ever-changing India.
